My work is an evolving series, each piece unique in form and decoration. Hand thrown on the potters wheel or assembled from slabs of varying thicknesses, I use porcelain and stoneware clay to form cups, bowls, pitchers and platters. I am interested in pots that function, that can be held and touched, enhancing our daily rituals.
I work in a series, sitting down to throw several pieces in a session. To decorate each piece, I use a wax resist process similar to batik: drawing images to suit each piece, brushing on color, applying wax resist and then scratching through, which is a sgraffito technique, to outline the images with black. Although labor intensive, these multiple steps allow each piece to develop a unique character.
Current work
To keep the process fresh and exciting, I continue to experiment with new glazes and colored slips. The oval has been of interest to me, probably in contrast to the symmetry of the wheel. Currently I am creating oval forms and asymmetrical vessels using slabs, texturing the surfaces and applying different colored glazes and slips. Yet I always return to function and pots that can be used, either out of the need to fill my own cupboard or inspired by the response of those who use my pots.
