Youth Arts and Young Adult Artists

This section will evolve as summer ends and fall begins, as students are off enjoying their remaining summer freedoms. The intent of this is to share with the community what art students of high school age are doing with their art, and will share information about the many mentors involved in their development. There will be strong connections to the high schools themselves for this information as well as private artists who are currently involved in mentoring young art students.

Holly exhibited her work at waterworks gallery this year. She also had spent a great deal of time with her art mentor, Thrinley DiMarco. A sample of Hollys' latest work seen at right.

Young Artist shown below are currently participating at the
Imagine Art Studio.

Maria Michaelson is a junior at Spring Street School. Her artistic passion and focus is reflected in her fine art work. Her sensitive portraits-- created in a vast range of colors and moods, using acrylics, oils, and superbly drafted drawings, are a pleasure to behold. Her travels to Cuba this last February with her school produced a series of exceptional scratchboard pieces by Maria energetically depicting the varied activities of the many children she met while there in Cuba.   Hallie James is a senior at Friday Harbor High School. Her goal this next fall is to attend Evergreen College with a major in Psychology, followed by a period of time at an art school of choice-perhaps in London-- in a few more years. This last summer she attended the Chicago Art Institute where she produced a great series of figurative oils and collage-inspired paintings that reflect her own vibrant style and personality. Here she received a top award for her work that summer.

Alex Skott is a junior at Spring Street School who lives on Orcas Island and commutes to Friday Harbor every day to go to school here. He explores his drawing with an inquisitive focus that is exemplary. His "Basquiat-like" paintings and creative personal flair is evident in all he touches. An avid skater and snowboarder, his interest in art and athletics combine well for him. Fahren Carlson is a sophomore at Spring Street School whose love of painting is a large part of her creativity and flair. Her soccer talents and her great academic skills are yet another part of her array of abilities! She is a wonderful asset to our art studio!

Gian Colombo is a junior at Spring Street School who commutes from Lopez every day. He is a talented La Crosse player, as well as a capable stained glass artist, gourd designer, and an avid painter. A new addition to our studio, he is ready for new mediums and experiences at every step. Cassandra Deane is a senior at Spring Street School who commutes from Shaw Island daily. Her fine array of art talents is a large part of her passion at present, and her goal is art education. This winter she will be teaching Middle School students at her school, and 7-11 year olds at our studio. Her energy and enthusiasm are infectious.

Evan Hetrick is 20 years old. Last year he attended Emily Carr Art Institute in Vancouver, B.C. and now is immersed in portraiture. He leaves for India and Thailand with the Spring Street School college students for 6-8 weeks this January through March 2004. His paintings and drawings, as well as his logo designs for snowboarding and for skateboarding clothing, all show a talent and a strong interest that has fine potential for him. Natalia Lawrence is 20 years old. Her cuisine as well as her art and acting talent combine to make Natalia a young woman of great creativity and expressiveness. She has attended Fairhaven College at WWU in Bellingham, and Prescott College in Arizona. Her travels included a trip to New Zealand just last spring, and Maui this spring to study Massage Therapy. Her fine art work has been admired in Friday Harbor for quite a while, and now her collage boxes and three-dimensional collages are a great addition.

You are invited to call us at 378-8375 if you are interested in certain pieces or wish to contact the artists for specific work. These students are dedicated to their art and their growth. It is a joy to work with them.
