I am Lavelle and I have been sculpting and carving for 35 years. An important aspect of my joy as an artist/sculptor is to co-create with the individuals who are drawn to my style and wish to have a piece in their homes, gardens, meditation spaces or offices. This journey of co-creation opens a portal through which we pass together into a creative place of wondrous possibilities.
To live here on San Juan Island in the Salish Sea is to live in a rare, provocative eco-system. The essence of this world of nature, the earth itself, sea, air, plant and tree life and creatures, evoke grand inspiration for the woman that I am. The tones, textures and shapes that the mystery of Nature elicits come forth in the wood sculptures that I have come to call "Contemporary Totems" I work with and often combine Redwood, that was struck down by lightning, and Cedar that was sustainably harvested. I love the beauty that emerges from combining the diffrent woods with tooled copper, which I have learned to do in the old Navajo way, abalone, quartz and amethyst crystals, as well as amber.
