"I've been pursuing my dream to make a life in the arts for the past 20 years."
Working in photography and mixed media, Sondra's playful sense of exploration and experimentation has led her to create a body of work that is evocative and sensual, humorous and quirky, beautiful and elegant.
Embarking on her artistic journey while living in Los Angeles, Sondra first turned her lens on that city's odd and colorful characters. Her portfolio of B&W street portraits remains a favorite. Relocationg to the pastoral San Juan Islands inspired a fresh vision, expressed in luminous hand-tinted B&W infrared images that capture the essence of the islands. Her current work embraces a variety of subjects with new media and original techniques.
However her visual investigations evolve, Sondra's underlying commitment to making an emotional connection with her viewers keeps her work growing in popularity, delighting both the eye and the heart.
Experiment, play and discovery have become Sondra's mantra with her photography medium. Up until several years ago, she printed her photographs in the darkroom and hand colored them with oil pastels, Marshall's oils, crayolas, pencils and brushes. Subsequently, she scanned SLR photographs into her computer and colored them in Adobe Photoshop. Purchasing a digital camera launched her into a totally new direction of exploration.
Now, after several years of working in those mediums, she has discovered a new direction to pursue that she clearly attributes to the experience of one class taken last year that pushed her into knowing what experimentation truly means. It is though her experimentation that she has come to know better the many uses of her flat bed scanner as well as Photoshop.
Sondra's new inspiration: her ETTAN Press, a recent purchase after an inspiring workshop on monotypes that produced yet another experience in transforming her photography. Now she takes her Photoshop-enhanced photographs and prints them to watercolor paper or film transparency and then runs them through the press, creating a new medium.. After evaluating her results, she can take it back to her scanner or printer and overlay various items - flowers or leaves, insects such as bees, Anything!
